Parents and caregivers of children with disabilities want the government to facilitate homeschooling for their children.

The idea was arrived at during a two days workshop organized by the Kenya Institute of special learning (KISE).

It’s the fourth conference by the KISE institution themed, “Parental Empowerment and Engagement in Nurturing Potential of Children with Disabilities.”

The 2022 event focused on all issues involving special needs education.

On Thursday, which was the second day of the event, parents called for inclusion during the policy-making process on matters of children with disabilities.

According to the government’s database, only 300,000 children with disabilities are enrolled in learning institutions, despite the number of children being born with disabilities growing each day.

To exonerate themselves from the low data, Parents faulted the government for the fewer special institutions which they say do not accommodate all natures of disabilities.

Education Shareholders, on the other hand, stated that the government should consider the cost of medication incurred by parents to children with disabilities adding that they should be exempted from paying taxes.

They further appealed to the government to ensure special needs institutions have the right infrastructures for learners with different disabilities.

The two-day event brought together education shareholders, parents, delegates, and children with disabilities.
