Caroline Wanjira has called for the urgent need to introduce disability-friendly vehicles during protests, especially when Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) are being handled by law enforcement.

Speaking during an engaging episode of The Hashtag podcast aired on Signs TV, Wanjira, who co-hosts the show alongside Christopher Mwololo, urged relevant authorities to prioritize the rights and dignity of PWDs.

She made the remarks while reflecting on the disturbing events of the June 25th anniversary protests, where reports indicated that some women were sexually assaulted. Wanjira called on the police to ensure that such violations are not repeated and demanded more humane treatment of PWDs during public demonstrations.

She particularly emphasized the need for specially designed vehicles that can accommodate individuals with disabilities, noting that forcing them into unsuitable police vehicles was both inhumane and undignified.

“We should have cars that are disability-friendly. You’re being nabbed by the police, then they start forcing you into vehicles that are not suited for you,” said Wanjira.

She further stressed that the general handling of PWD protesters should never be violent. Instead, she called on law enforcement and public systems to adopt more inclusive approaches that respect the rights and physical needs of all citizens, regardless of their abilities.
