CBC Assessments for Learners with Disabilities

The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) examines learners with disabilities differently than other learners.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) states that students with mild physical, hearing, and visual disabilities follow the age-based pathway, which is the standard curriculum.

Students with severe and intellectual disabilities, like those in the conventional curriculum, follow stage-based routes, which are divided into four stages.

The first level, known as the foundational level, is where students are positioned based on how severe their disability is.
In contrast to the traditional curriculum, which has a predetermined timetable, the KNEC assesses learners when they are ready.

KNEC chose to make their evaluations performance-based in light of the type of disability they have. There is no written examination for this group of students.
While observing the student, the teacher grades their performance using a scoring guide.

The two curriculums cannot be compared as the age-based learners are moving on a regulated programme from year to year, while the stage-based learners are progressing individually depending on the skills acquired.

At the foundational level, this group of students will take the Kenya Foundational Level Education Assessment as a summative test when they are ready to move on.
The second level is known as the intermediate level, and the formative/school assessment covers seven learning areas.
When the student is ready to move on to the next level, he or she will take the Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment.
The third level is pre-vocational; learners here are introduced to pre-requisite skills in various vocational areas to enable them to identify their abilities in a given field.

When a learner reaches the final level, they take the summative Kenya Pre-Vocational Level Education Assessment. The final level is called the vocational level, where the learners will sit for the Kenya Vocational Level Education Assessment once they specialize in a skill they have an interest in.

According to the KNEC, input from each evaluation is used to determine passage to the next level.
