Sombre Farewell For Slain Teacher And Blogger Albert Ojwang As Tensions Linger In Homa Bay

BY BARAKA SIMBA
A somber atmosphere enveloped Nyawango Primary School in Homa Bay County on Friday morning as the burial service for the late Albert Ojwang got underway, following a tense night vigil marked by unease and subdued emotions.
Despite the significance of the occasion, there was a conspicuous absence of security personnel and local political leaders, including the area governor Gladys Wanga, raising eyebrows among mourners and activists.
Ojwang, a trained teacher and blogger, had become a symbol of unresolved questions following his death under mysterious circumstances. His final journey was marred by tension on Thursday, when chaotic scenes unfolded during the arrival of his body at his Kokwanyo home, with a standoff involving students from Mawego Technical College nearby.
Local activist Odhiambo Ojiro praised the youth for turning out in large numbers to honor Ojwang’s legacy, calling the show of solidarity a powerful cry for justice.
“The youth have shown up to honor one of their own. This is bigger than politics; it’s about justice,” Ojiro stated.
Ojwang’s body was ferried to Homa Bay on Thursday from Nairobi following an emotional requiem mass held on Wednesday at Ridgeways Baptist Church. The slain blogger died on June 8th while in police custody at Central Police Station, just a day after he was allegedly taken from his parents’ home by DCI officers.
