Netflix Partners With RespectAbility To Increase Disability Representation In Kids' TV Programs
Netflix in partnership with RespectAbility have partnered to bring a new program for children with disabilities animators and content writers.
The program will provide an education and training platform for writers, animators, and creative executives with disabilities in preschool and children’s television.
According to Netflix, the program will run for five weeks and also include programming by New York-based production partners 9 Story Media Group and Silvergate Media.
The program, funded by Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, will be held in New York City and over Zoom starting Oct. 17
Interested participants will join in-person and virtual workshops, trainings, panel conversations, and networking events.
Participants will be assigned with a mentor and participate in a talent showcase with table reads of each writer’s project performed by disabled actors.
The program will also include a career development week with different industry experts to enable participants to secure employment opportunities.
Sign language interpreters will be provided as well as captioning for all educational and related networking events.
RespectAbility Entertainment Lab was found in 2019 to show the industry that there are disabled writers, directors, and crew.
RespectAbility is a diverse and disability-led nonprofit organization that works to create systemic change in how society views and values persons with disabilities.
Netflix is a subscription-based streaming service that allows Television owners to watch shows and movies without commercials on an internet-connected device.
