The dusk-to-dawn curfew enforced in Marsabit county last month has been extended by 30days.

Interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i in a gazette notice explained that the curfew had been imposed due to a serious threat to security in the region.

“This Order shall apply during the hours of darkness between Six O’clock in the evening and Six O’clock in the morning with effect from 1st June 2022″, Matiang’i said.

CS Matiang’i said the extension of the curfew is to enable the ongoing operations to meet their targets.

Therefore, there shall be no public gatherings, processions, or movement, either alone or as a group during the curfew hours except as permitted in writing by the Inspector General of the National Police Service.

He further pointed out that the upsurge of the attacks in the Northern Kenya region was fueled by political leaders who had been called for talks to help the security teams restore peace but did not show up.

Speaking after a meeting with senior security officials at the GSU headquarters in Ruaraka, Matiang’i said the attacks are carried out by unknown gangs from the two rival communities, Borana and Gabra who are in possession of illegal ammunition.

The operation is targetting illegal guns and ammunition, so far since May, the security teams have been able to recover 140 firearms and over 1000 bullets.
