The body of slain teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang was on Wednesday received at Ridgeways Baptist Church in Nairobi, where a solemn requiem mass was held ahead of his burial scheduled for Friday this week.

The ceremony was attended by grieving family members, political leaders, and human rights activists who joined in mourning the 38-year-old, whose life was tragically cut short while in police custody.

Albert’s father, Meshack Ojwang, delivered an emotional tribute during the service, expressing sorrow and a longing for justice.

“I want to say that the blood of Albert, which was shed innocently, will not be in vain. Those who took the life of their fellow human being to cover up their evil may retain wealth, respect, or fame, but they will never find peace,” he said.

Among those present at the mass were former Attorney General Justin Muturi, former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, and activist and comedian Eric Omondi. They stood in solidarity with the family, calling for accountability and justice.

Ojwang was arrested on June 7 at his home in Homa Bay County, about 400 kilometers from Nairobi, and was found dead the next day in police custody at Nairobi Central Police Station. Authorities claimed he was being investigated for false publication, an accusation that triggered his controversial arrest.

The case has drawn widespread attention and condemnation, with critics questioning the handling of his detention and the circumstances surrounding his death. While some of the suspects remain in court, Kenyans continue to demand answers and justice in a case that has raised fresh concerns over police brutality.

Ojwang’s burial is set to take place on Friday in Homa Bay County.
