Government Waives Medical Bills for Protest Victims, Including Deceased Boniface Kariuki

The government has announced a full waiver of all medical bills for patients who sustained injuries during the widespread protests on June 17 and June 25, 2025. This move is expected to significantly relieve affected families burdened by treatment costs.
In a statement issued from Kajiado County on Tuesday, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale directed Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to bill all protest-related care charges directly to the hospital's Disaster Emergency Fund.
"The recent demonstrations in Nairobi on June 17 and 25, 2025, caused injuries and emotional suffering for many Kenyans. As a ministry, our hearts go out to all those affected, and we are committed to providing them with the care and assistance they require," CS Duale stated.
He further elaborated, "As a result, I have directed the management of Kenyatta National Hospital to waive all medical bills for patients injured during the protests and charge them to the hospital's Disaster Emergency Fund."
The directive specifically includes the outstanding medical debt of the late Boniface Kariuki, who tragically succumbed to his injuries on Monday afternoon, June 30, 2025.
Kariuki, a mask vendor, was reportedly shot at close range by a police officer during the June 17 protests. His case had drawn significant national attention.
The ministry also acknowledged the profound emotional toll the events have taken on many citizens and reiterated its ongoing support for those still in recovery.
"We offer our deepest condolences to families who have lost loved ones and extend our support to all those still recovering," Duale concluded, highlighting the government's compassion in the wake of the unrest.
