The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to review the collective bargaining agreement signed in 2021.

“We have written a letter to the TSC and I have given them 14 days to bring us to the table so that we can start reviewing the monetary CBA that we signed in 2021,” Oyuu said.

According to KNUT secretary general Collins Oyuu, the push for salary reviews is due to an expected increase in taxation which will take effect once the court gives a verdict on the suspended Finance bill.

The KNUT Secretary said SRC had stopped KNUT from initiating salary negotiations signed in 2021 but since the restriction had been lifted the union is seeking a dialogue with their employer.

The TSC has responded to the strike notice by saying that they are committed to resolving the issues with KNUT through dialogue.

Meanwhile, health practitioners have also planned a strike if the government does not respond to their demands for a review of their collective bargaining agreement.

The medics want salary reviews to cushion them against the tax measures already implemented.

If the strike does go ahead, it will be the first major strike by teachers and medics in Kenya in several years. It is likely to have a significant impact on the education and health sector.
