Kenyans on Monday night were treated to a heated Nairobi gubernatorial debate intensified by war of words between Senator Johnson Sakaja and his rival Polycarp Igathe.

Senator Sakaja, who is in the Nairobi gubernatorial race on an UDA ticket accused Igathe (Jubilee Party) of being unfit for the Nairobi office because he was given a chance to work under former governor Mike Sonko and ran away from the mandate.

“The fact is that you ran away from office and Nairobi residents can’t trust you with managing the affairs of the city,”Sakaja told Igathe.

The Nairobi senator further blamed Igathe for the city’s predicaments after governor Sonko’s impeachment, adding that he could have salvaged the situation in the city only if he did not abscond duties.

Igathe, while responding to allegations by his opponent said, he was not allocated duties as the deputy governor of the Nairobi county, hence, he could not accept earning a salary from tax payers’ money but resolved to resigning.

Sakaja, who had earlier indicated that he will skip the debate arrived late with at least 20minutes into the debate and claimed to the panelists that he wanted to give his opponent a head start.

The two aspirants are considered as the front runners in the race as seen in the recent opinion poll where Sakaja is at 39 percent and Igathe follows with 33 percent.
