Presidential Debate Slated For July 2022

The presidential debate for the 2022 August general election has been set by the media stakeholders to take place in July 2022.

The debate will be organized and accomplished by the Kenya Editors Guild, Media Council of Kenya, and media owners association, who will liaise with relevant election stakeholders and political parties.

The teams led by Clifford Machoka, who was appointed as the head of the presidential debate secretariat, further announced that dates for the debate will be communicated later.

Machoka will be assisted by Leo Matisya, the head of Research and Media Monitoring at the Media Council of Kenya. Matisya will, in turn, be deputized by Rosalia Omungo, the Chief Executive Officer Kenya Editors Guild.

They will be joined by a team of senior editors from across media houses that have been established to provide stewardship of the content aspects given how critical the debates are to ensure the public interest obligations are served.

Different structures have been put in place to secure the interest of Kenyans and to deliver fairness to all concerned, especially audiences and candidates.

The presidential debate was instituted by the media as a cornerstone pillar of our democracy and electoral process for the benefit of the Kenyan people.

“We reassure the public and stakeholders in the electoral process we will give Kenyans quality issue-based

Presidential and Deputy Presidential Debates that will enable their decision making and effective participation in this year’s election” the three parties said in a statement.
