President Ruto Cancels Adani Deals
President William Ruto has instructed the ministry of Energy and Transport to halt the ongoing Adani negotiations.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, the president said the move followed credible evidence from the relevant agencies.
According to the head of state, with such overwhelming evidence, the current agreements with the Adani Group could not carry on.
"Based on the new information provided by investigating agencies and partnering nations, the procuring agencies within the Ministry of Transport and Energy immediately cancel the ongoing process for the JKIA PPP deal and KETRACO deal," he said.
President Ruto’s announcement comes as the United States government charged Gautam Adani, chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group, for allegedly paying Ksh. 30 billion in bribes to the Indian government to obtain solar energy supply contracts.
Under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, Adani had offered a Ksh.260 billion agreement to upgrade the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for 30 years and contribute Ksh.95 billion to build the nation's transmission lines.
Meanwhile, the Adani Group has refuted allegations made by US prosecutors that its founder, Gautam Adani, engaged in bribery to secure government contracts.
The conglomerate has labeled these claims as baseless and has vowed to pursue legal action.
