The ninth annual Devolution Conference has officially kicked off in Homa Bay County, with President William Ruto presiding over the opening ceremony.
The five-day conference, themed "10 Years of Devolution: The Present and the Future," brings together national and county government leaders, policymakers, and various stakeholders to assess the progress and challenges of devolution in Kenya.
The Council of Governors (CoG), represented by its chairperson, has been vocal about the need for increased funding for county governments.
The CoG is pushing for a larger share of the national budget, arguing that the current allocation is insufficient to effectively carry out the devolved functions mandated by the Constitution.
The CoG's CEO, Mary Mwiti, confirmed that all preparations for the conference were in place, assuring the media that the host county was ready to welcome the large number of delegates.
This year's event is expected to feature a wide range of discussions on good governance, human rights, and the financing of equity and inclusion. The gathering is a crucial opportunity for leaders to address the challenges facing devolution and ensure it continues to be a driving force for development across the country.
