Migori PWDs and IDPs Accuse Leaders of Sabotaging Access to President Ruto, Claims of Marginalization and Exclusion

Persons with disabilities (PWDs) and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Migori County have accused local leaders of deliberately sidelining them and obstructing their access to President William Ruto during his recent visit to the region.

In a press conference, the groups voiced their frustration, claiming they were barred from presenting their grievances directly to the President.

They alleged that local political leaders have consistently marginalized them by hijacking leadership opportunities, including nomination slots, which they claim are often given to relatives and cronies of influential figures.

"We were hopeful that the President's visit would be an opportunity for us to air our long-standing issues, but our leaders ensured we never got the chance," said a representative of the PWDs. "The nomination slots meant for vulnerable groups are being used as a reward system for political loyalty, leaving us without a voice."

The groups also raised concerns about the delayed compensation for victims of the 2007/2008 post-election violence.

They further alleged that the "Inua Jamii" cash transfer program, meant to support the most vulnerable, is being manipulated by local politicians for personal gain.

The PWDs and IDPs are now appealing directly to President Ruto to establish a transparent and direct mechanism for disbursing compensation funds and social welfare benefits.

They believe this will bypass corrupt local channels and ensure that the funds reach the intended beneficiaries without political interference.
