Weatherman: Kenya To Experience Delayed Rains

The Kenya Meteorological Department on Wednesday said the country is set to experience a delayed onset of the long rainy season.

According to the forecast, only a small fraction of the country will receive normal rains, with the rest registering highly depressed rainfall that is set to start in two weeks.

Dr.David Gikungu, who is the Kenya meteorological service Director, asked Kenyans to utilize the rainfall amounts effectively.

“The forecast indicates that parts of Northwestern region of the country that is the Central and Eastern Turkana, South Rift Valley parts of Eastern Narok, the Southeastern lowlands of Kajiado and western parts of Marsabit are likely to experience near-average rainfall,” said Dr. Gikungu.

"Lake Victoria Basin region, Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Central Rift Valley, parts of South Rift Valley that is the Western parts of Narok, and parts of Northwest region around the Western part Turkana are likely to experience below-average rainfall," he added.

The Director is urging Kenyans to prepare for the rainfall season by buying storage water tanks to increase the harvesting of water which in turn will serve them when the rain is gone.

The peak seasons of the rains is expected to be in April. The Director however notes that there could be episodic rainstorms that could result into floods in the perennial flood-prone areas of the country.

He is also urging Kenyans living in the pastrol areas to consider selling their livestock because of the increased animal mortality that will be there, and then they can recover them after the weather improves instead of losing them due to climate change.

“The projected low rainfall combined with above-average temperatures may have a negative impact on pasture regeneration, particularly in ASAL areas,” he said.
