NCPWD Launches Autism Awareness Celebrations

The National Council of Persons with Disabilities has kicked off its month-long celebration of World Autism Awareness, beginning with medical assessments and registrations.
According to the council in a social media post, the assessments are a key component of its efforts to support individuals with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities.
The celebrations will culminate in a major event at Nyayo Gardens, Nakuru, on Wednesday. Throughout April, the council aims to share personal stories and provide opportunities to enhance public understanding and acceptance of individuals with autism.
A key focus of the council is to strengthen governmental support for persons with autism and other developmental disabilities, both nationally and at the county level.
"This year, we are committed to standing together to make a difference in Kenya for persons with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities," a council representative stated.
The National Council of Persons with Disabilities is collaborating with various stakeholders across the country to recognize and promote awareness of the rights of individuals with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities within Kenyan society.
Autism spectrum disorder is a brain development condition that affects how a person perceives and interacts with others, producing difficulties in social interaction and communication. The condition is also characterized by confined and repetitive behavioral patterns. The term "spectrum" in autism spectrum disorder refers to the diverse range of symptoms and severity.
Medical experts say symptoms may exhibit in early infancy, such as decreased eye contact, a lack of responsiveness to their name, or indifference toward caretakers. Other children may develop normally for the first few months or years of life but later become introverted, violent, or lose previously gained language skills. The signs are usually visible by the age of two.
Each child with autism spectrum disorder is likely to exhibit a distinct pattern of behavior and severity ranging from poor to high functioning.
