Garissa County marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on December 3rd with a strong message of inclusion and a series of empowering actions, including the hiring of qualified PWD professionals.
County Governor Nathif Jama led the commemoration by issuing a strong warning to parents: stop hiding your children with disabilities at home and ensure they are integrated into society.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration's commitment, stating that the county has devised various strategies for employing PWDs and is actively providing them with assistive tools to promote self-reliance.
The joint message from the county leadership emphasizes that PWDs must be recognized as integral members of society entitled to equal opportunities and support.
A crucial highlight of the IDPD activities was the official welcome of Dr. Abdi Aden Ali, a young medical surgeon with a speech disability, to the professional team at Garissa Referral Hospital.
Dr. Abdi acquired a terminal disability following a tragic accident during his final year of medical school.
Governor Jama noted that Dr. Ali’s "unwavering determination to complete his studies despite immense challenges remains truly an inspiration to many."
His appointment was celebrated as a powerful demonstration that disability is not inability.
