President William Ruto has appointed former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) for a three-year term, reinforcing the government's leadership at the country's competition regulator.

The appointment was announced through Gazette Notice No. 8372 dated June 26, 2026, and took effect immediately. Murungi will serve as the board's non-executive chair, providing strategic leadership and oversight to the authority responsible for enforcing Kenya's competition and consumer protection laws.

Murungi is a seasoned lawyer and politician with more than three decades of experience in public service. He previously served as Governor of Meru County from 2017 to 2022 after representing the county as senator between 2013 and 2017. Before the advent of devolved government, he was the Member of Parliament for South Imenti Constituency for several terms.

He also held several Cabinet positions under former President Mwai Kibaki, including Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs and later Minister for Energy. Throughout his political career, Murungi played a prominent role in governance and constitutional reform initiatives.

The Competition Authority of Kenya is the statutory agency established under the Competition Act to promote and safeguard competition in the Kenyan market. The authority investigates anti-competitive conduct, reviews mergers and acquisitions, protects consumers from unfair trade practices and works to ensure competitive markets that benefit businesses and consumers alike.

As Non-Executive Chairperson, Murungi will lead the board in providing policy direction, corporate governance and strategic oversight while the authority's management team continues to handle its day-to-day regulatory operations.

His appointment comes at a time when the Competition Authority has intensified enforcement of competition laws, increased scrutiny of mergers and acquisitions, and strengthened consumer protection measures across sectors including telecommunications, banking, retail, manufacturing and digital markets.

Murungi's appointment adds to his extensive record of leadership in public institutions and is expected to bolster the authority's governance as it continues implementing its mandate of promoting fair competition and protecting consumers in Kenya.

The Gazette Notice states that the appointment is for a period of three years from June 26, 2026, unless otherwise terminated in accordance with the applicable laws governing state corporations and public appointments.
