International Day Of Persons With Disabilities
The National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) partnered with West Pokot County and other stakeholders to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Sunday at the Makutano Stadium in West Pokot.
This year's theme, "United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities," highlighted the progress towards disability inclusion through sustainable development goals.
Labor and Social Protection Minister Florence Bore reaffirmed the government's commitment to updating the 2003 Persons with Disabilities Act to fit the current Constitution and realities.
She praised the new Disability Registration service on eCitizen, making it easier for people with disabilities to register and get certificates from their phones.
Minister Bore also urged the Council to spread the word about this new service.
In a significant move for inclusion, the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Huduma Kenya Secretariat (HKS) to provide vital disability services through the network of 52 Huduma centers across the country.
This collaboration aims to bridge the gap in accessibility and ensure greater reach for persons with disabilities seeking support.
NCPWD Executive Director Harun Hassan and HKS Ag. CEO Mugambi Njeru inked the agreement, marking a new chapter in empowering the disability community.
The NCPD also facilitated the distribution of mobility devices to persons with disabilities, thanks to their partnership with Hope Mobility Kenya.
To emphasize the crucial role of persons with disabilities in environmental action, the Council spearheaded planting 1,300 trees in three special schools, aligning with the Presidential Directive on the National Tree Growing Restoration Campaign. This demonstration of environmental consciousness sets a powerful example.
