Gov't Declares Friday A Public Holiday To Mark Eid-Ul-Adha
The government has declared Friday, June 6, 2025, a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Adha, one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar.
In a statement dated June 3, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced the holiday under the provisions of Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act (Cap. 110).
"It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares Friday, the 6th of June, 2024, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-Al-Adha," read the notice in part.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham's) readiness to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) in accordance with God's mandate. According to Islamic faith, God intervened and sent a ram as a substitute sacrifice.
To celebrate this, Muslims all across the world execute the ritual slaughter of an animal, usually a sheep, goat, cow, or camel. The meat is divided to family, friends, and the less fortunate, emphasizing the importance of charity, sharing, and community.
