Gabon Coup Council To Swear In Its Leader As President
The Gabon coup council is set to swear in its leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, as president on Monday, September 4, 2023. Nguema led the coup that overthrew President Ali Bongo Ondimba on August 30, 2023.
The coup council has named itself the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI). The CTRI has said that it will hold elections within 18 months. However, the African Union has condemned the coup and suspended Gabon's membership.
The AU tweeted that it “strongly condemns the military takeover of power in the Republic of Gabon, which ousted President Ali Bongo on 30 August 2023”.
On Wednesday, the head of the AU, Moussa Faki Mahamat, called on the Gabonese army and security forces “to guarantee the physical integrity” of Bongo, who the coup leaders said had been placed under house arrest.
Faki also condemned the coup and said the events in Gabon were a “flagrant violation” of the legal and political instruments of the Addis Ababa-headquartered African Union.
The swearing-in of General Brice Oligui Nguema would take place at the constitutional court, said a spokesman for the junta, providing an indication of how the “committee for the transition and restoration of institutions” will operate.
The military wanted to reassure donors it would “respect all commitments” at home and abroad and “phase in” transitional institutions, Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi Manfoumbi, spokesman for the new regime, said on state television.
