Mothers of Children with Disabilities in Uasin Gishu County Advocate for Greater Paternal Involvement

Mothers raising children with disabilities in Uasin Gishu County are increasingly vocalizing the need for a more equitable distribution of caregiving responsibilities, traditionally shouldered primarily by them. This call for change was highlighted by Rose Kavuli, a parent and representative of the Sparkling Haven Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting children with disabilities in the region.
Speaking out on behalf of many mothers within the community, Kavuli emphasized the societal norm that often leaves mothers solely responsible for the complex and demanding task of raising children with special needs. While acknowledging the traditional view of mothers as primary caregivers, she underscored the damaging societal stigma and unjust blame often directed at them when a child is born with a disability.
"In many families, when a mother gives birth to a child with a disability, she is often blamed and accused of being the cause of the misfortune. This blame tragically leads to broken families," Kavuli stated, shedding light on the emotional and social burdens faced by these mothers.
While expressing gratitude for the minority of fathers who actively support their partners in this journey, Kavuli passionately advocated for a significant shift in parental involvement. She stressed the critical need for more fathers to stand alongside mothers, sharing the challenges and responsibilities inherent in raising a child with a disability.
The Sparkling Haven Foundation, through Kavuli's advocacy, aims to raise awareness about the crucial role of fathers in the lives of children with disabilities and the immense pressure placed on mothers who often navigate this path alone. The organization hopes to foster a more supportive and inclusive environment where both parents actively participate in the upbringing, emotional well-being, and overall development of their children with disabilities.
This call for shared responsibility seeks to not only alleviate the burden on mothers but also strengthen family units and provide a more holistic and nurturing environment for children with special needs.
