Vihiga County Receives Subsidized Fertilizer for Short Rains Season Planting
Vihiga County has recently obtained a supply of 40,000 fifty-kilogram (kg) bags of subsidized fertilizer, specifically intended for maize planting during the short rainy season.
Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo has announced that the 50-kg bags of fertilizer will be made available to farmers at a reduced price of Sh. 2,500 per bag, down from the original price of Sh. 3,500. This move aligns with the national government's commitment to lower input costs, ultimately contributing to improved food security.
The timely arrival of the fertilizer, which includes both planting and top-dressing variants, is highly appreciated by Governor Ottichilo. With the farmers currently gearing up for the second planting season, this initiative is set to significantly support their agricultural activities.
During the flagging-off ceremony at the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depot in the Chavakali market, the governor urged agricultural extension officers to educate farmers on the proper and effective usage of fertilizer inputs. This, in turn, will lead to enhanced productivity and yield.
The Subsidy Program, facilitated by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party Secretary General, Cleophas Malala, has selected Vihiga County as one of the 30 counties to benefit from the subsidy due to its classification as a region experiencing short rains. Furthermore, in the forthcoming distributions, the package will include 25-kg bags of fertilizer, catering to farmers with smaller plots of land for their convenience.
This initiative is expected to provide vital support to farmers in Vihiga County, boosting agricultural productivity and ensuring a more secure food supply in the region.
