Reuben Kigame’s Petition
A renowned gospel artist, Reuben Kigame who was hopeful of becoming Kenya's 5th president in the 2022 General Elections filed a petition at the Supreme court seeking to challenge the August 9th presidential results.
Kigame wants the Supreme Court to render the elections null and void on grounds that: unreasonable deadlines put in place by IEBC for the presidential candidates to provide requirements for a presidential aspirant (the requirements included 48000 identity cards of registered voters).
“My dream together with that of other Independent aspirants in exercising our civil and political rights got into jeopardy as a result of the unreasonableness and discriminatory actions by the 1st respondent,” said Kigame in his petition.
Kigame listed IEBC as the first respondent and IEBC chair Mr. Wafula Chebukati as the second respondent.
Kigame also stated that he wants the court to issue an order for costs in his favor.
“The Honourable Court be pleased to issue any other or further remedy that it shall deem fit to grant in the interests of justice in the circumstances of this Petition,” added Kigame.
Earlier, a court ruling was issued to the electoral body to clear Kigame and allow him to vie for the seat but IEBC appealed against the decision.
According to a ruling made by Justice Mrima, the IEBC’s Dispute Resolution Committee violated Kigame’s right under the Persons with Disability Act.
