12 Orphanages Shut Down in Crackdown Over Poor Conditions

At least 12 children’s homes have been shut down in an ongoing operation led by the Children’s Department in collaboration with security agencies.
In Nyosia, Nyaribari Chache, tensions flared after one orphanage owner allegedly locked eight children under a bed to evade arrest. Authorities say the facility has been housing up to 10 children without official government registration since 2016. The minors were reportedly being taught by individuals whose identities remain unknown.
According to officials, the raid targeted facilities operating without licenses, keeping children in unsafe and overcrowded environments. Poor sanitation, lack of proper food, and absence of qualified caregivers were cited as key reasons for the closures. The rescued children have been placed under government care as investigations and legal action against the operators proceed.
