Meru MCAs Impeach Governor Mwangaza For The Second Time
Embattled Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza was impeached on Wednesday for the second time in 10 months after all 59 members of the County Assembly present voted for her removal. The 10 MCAs who opposed the impeachment were absent from the assembly.
“It is my pleasure to announce the "yes" have it. The motion has passed and the governor stands impeached by the County Assembly of Meru,” Meru County Assembly Speaker Ayub Bundi declared.
Governor Mwangaza was first impeached by the County Assembly in December last year, barely three months into office, but the Senate overturned the resolution on December 30.
Meru MCAs accuses Mwangaza of misuse of public funds, gross misconduct, and contempt of the county assembly and court.
She is also accused of nepotism for employing her husband’s nephew as the CEO of Meru Youth Service (MYS) and Acting Chief Officer of Finance.
Further, Mwangaza is facing allegations of misusing county resources including funds and vehicles to run her charity initiative dubbed Okolea.
The governor had moved to the Appellate court to stop her planned impeachment but the court said it would rule on the matter on Friday, October 27, 2023.
Her fate now lies with the Senate which is expected to uphold or overturn the impeachment.
Mwangaza is a first-term Governor, who was elected on an independent ticket.
