Men's Mental Health Awareness: How to Recognize When you are Experiencing a Mental Health Condition

This month, SignsTV is marking Men's Mental Health Awareness by delving into an important, yet frequently disregarded, aspect of men’s mental health: how to recognize when you are experiencing a mental health condition. While society often considers men as stronger and less openly expressive of distress, the truth is that they are not immune to mental health issues.

For far too long, discussions about mental health have centered on women, leaving out males, who frequently serve as the foundational pillars of their families.
This societal perception has encouraged males to conceal their agony and portray an image of strength, causing them to internalize their troubles rather than exhibiting what may be considered as weakness.

Experts say men, like women, face extreme situations that can lead to significant distress and subsequent mental health issues.

Here are some key indicators that you or someone you know might be struggling with a mental health issue:

Emotional and Mood Shifts: This can encompass anger, irritability, or aggressiveness that is out of character, or noticeable changes in mood that are sustained and impactful

Behavioral Changes: You might observe changes in energy level or appetite, significant difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much, or an increase in high-risk activities. Another red flag is the misuse of alcohol, drugs, or both as a coping mechanism.

Cognitive Difficulties: This includes difficulty concentrating, feeling restless or on edge, and increased worry or feeling stressed to an overwhelming degree.

Physical Manifestations: Mental distress can often present with physical symptoms such as aches, headaches, or digestive problems without a clear medical cause.

Impact on Daily Functioning: A significant indicator is when thoughts or behaviors begin to interfere with work, family, or social life, making it challenging to maintain routines and relationships.

Serious Warning Signs: The most critical symptoms to be aware of are thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts.

It's important to remember that mental disorders are treatable. If you're looking for help, a great starting point is the people around you or a professional who will rule out any underlying physical conditions and, crucially, refer you to a qualified mental health professional.
