Machakos PWDs Launch Parasports Revival Drive

Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Machakos County are embarking on an ambitious drive to revitalize parasports in the region, launching a critical fundraising initiative to acquire much-needed specialized equipment.
Speaking from Machakos People's Park during a cycling competition, Abdalla Ndarukaria, an officer with the Hope Disability Organisation, highlighted the persistent challenges faced by PWDs in sports, particularly regarding access and resources.
"Persons with disabilities can participate in various games, and we wanted to demonstrate our capabilities," Ndarukaria stated. "However, we consistently face hurdles, especially with travel to participate in these."
He emphasized that while talent is abundant, the lack of proper equipment and logistical support often limits participation and competitive performance.
The initiative has already begun to garner attention and is expected to receive support from local leaders, community well-wishers, and corporate partners.
The PWD community in Machakos County is striving to establish a robust framework for parasports, aiming to benefit a wide range of individuals with diverse abilities and ensure they are not left behind in the sporting arena.
Machakos County's Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth, Sports, Gender, and Social Welfare, Sharon Mutua, affirmed the county government's unwavering commitment to this cause.
"The county is actively working to ensure PWDs are not operating on the fringes of society but are instead active and integral members," Mutua said. She added that this inclusion drive aligns directly with Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s manifesto and broader plan to mainstream PWD inclusion across all county activities and initiatives, ensuring that PWDs have equitable access to opportunities and resources.
