LSK Petitions Court to Halt Implementation of Controversial Housing Levy
In a recent development, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has taken legal action to block the implementation of the contentious housing levy proposed by the government.
LSK argues that the enactment of this law could exacerbate the already critical issue of unemployment in the country, contradicting the principle of social justice enshrined in the Constitution.
LSK has formally requested the court to issue restraining orders preventing the government from proceeding with the housing levy.
Additionally, they are seeking enforcement of Section 10 (2) (3) of the Income Tax Act, as amended by Section 7 of the Finance Act 2023, to further support their case.
This move by LSK comes amid growing concerns about the potential adverse effects of the housing levy on the nation's employment rates, adding to the ongoing economic challenges faced by the nation.
The court's decision on the matter will be crucial in determining the future course of action regarding this controversial policy.
