Tanzania Law Society Condemns "Shameful" Deportation of Karua

Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) President Boniface A.K. Mwabukusi has condemned as “shameful and deeply saddening” the blocking of Kenyan lawyers Gloria Kimani, Martha Karua, and journalist Lyn Ngugi from entering Tanzania to observe proceedings involving Advocate Tundu Antipas Lissu.
Mwabukusi affirmed that Tanzanian law permits anyone to attend a public hearing and that the detention of Martha Karua and her colleagues was completely uncalled for.
“There is no offense in anyone coming to observe legal proceedings against Tundu Antipas Lissu,” said Mwabukusi, describing the deportation threats as “a serious violation of the law and the Constitution.”
In response, TLS immediately engaged Advocate Hekima Mwasipu to pursue the matter legally. According to a statement Mwabukusi released via his social media platforms, he emphasized the need for immigration officers to avoid being used in political battles and ideological conflicts.
“We urge the Immigration Department to carry out its duties professionally and refrain from tarnishing the country’s image by escalating unnecessary commotion,” Mwabukusi stated.
TLS maintains that justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done.
