The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has opened applications for the 2026/2027 academic year undergraduate and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) loans and scholarships, allowing first-time applicants to seek government financial support for their studies.

The application window targets students joining universities and TVET institutions who have not previously received HELB funding. Eligible learners can now submit their applications through the official Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal.

The financing is provided under the government’s Student-Centred Funding Model, which assesses applicants based on their level of financial need before determining the amount of support they receive through scholarships, loans and household contributions.

Students applying for undergraduate funding are required to have secured admission to a recognised university and provide the necessary academic and personal details during the online application process.

TVET students joining approved institutions are also eligible to apply for financial support through the programme. The funding is aimed at helping learners meet tuition and other education-related costs during their training.

Applicants are required to create an account on the HEF portal, complete their profiles, provide accurate information and submit their applications electronically for consideration.

The application process requires students to provide details such as their national identification information, admission details, parents’ information and other supporting documents required for verification.

HELB has advised students to apply using official platforms only and avoid sharing personal information with unauthorised individuals or websites claiming to offer assistance with applications.

The board has also encouraged applicants to submit their requests early to allow enough time for verification, processing and communication before they report to their respective institutions.

The opening of the 2026/2027 funding window comes as thousands of students prepare to join universities and TVET colleges following placement and admission processes.

Under the student-centred financing model, the government aims to improve access to higher education by directing financial support to students based on their individual circumstances.

HELB continues to urge eligible learners to take advantage of the available loans and scholarships to support their education journeys.
