The Ministry of Education has announced that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will introduce electronic KCSE certificates alongside an online verification system. The initiative, unveiled by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba at KNEC offices in South C, will initially cover candidates who sat exams from 2023 onwards.

The move is aimed at modernising exam administration, reducing operational costs, and aligning Kenya’s education sector with global digital standards. The digital certificates, also known as e‑certificates, are designed to be secure, efficient, and environmentally sustainable, while improving accessibility and strengthening data protection.

KNEC plans to pilot the system by the end of February 2026, with a nationwide rollout to follow. Officials emphasised that physical paper certificates will remain valid and necessary for official purposes such as job applications and further education.

The online verification platform will allow employers, universities, and other institutions to confirm the authenticity of KCSE credentials swiftly, addressing concerns about certificate fraud and boosting confidence in Kenyan qualifications both locally and internationally.

Officials noted that, after a successful pilot, the digital certificate system may be expanded to include certificates issued before 2023, further broadening access and verification capabilities.

Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative as part of Kenya’s broader digital transformation of public services, even as authorities continue efforts to strengthen examination security and public trust in national assessments.

The Ministry and KNEC reiterated that the e‑certificate system complements, rather than replaces, existing paper certificates, ensuring candidates maintain a physical record for official use.

Experts have praised the development, noting that digital verification could significantly reduce delays and costs for institutions that rely on KCSE results for admissions and employment screening.

The initiative marks a major step in Kenya’s efforts to modernise its education infrastructure and embrace digital solutions for improved efficiency, transparency, and sustainability.
