The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) on Friday marked a significant milestone, celebrating its 44th Graduation Ceremony at the main campus in Lang'ata, Nairobi.

The event was not just a celebration of academic achievement but a powerful commissioning of its graduates to be ethical leaders and active drivers of the nation's economic progress.

The ceremony underscored CUEA's standing as a leading regional institution, drawing high-profile chief guests, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Dr. Gerard J. Rooney, President of St. John Fisher University in New York, who was accompanied by his spouse, Susan Rooney.

In his address, Vice Chancellor Rev. Prof. Stephen Mbugua Ngari congratulated the graduands, along with their parents, sponsors, and guardians, for choosing CUEA.

He reaffirmed the university's steadfast commitment to delivering quality education.

Ngari emphasized that the university's mission is to provide graduates with the right skills and a holistic formation necessary to thrive in the highly competitive employment sector.

Echoing this sentiment, Prime Cabinet Secretary Mudavadi said the ceremony marks another proud chapter of an illustrious journey for the institution, adding that it reaffirms CUEA’s steadfast commitment to its vision as a world-class university that nurtures transformative leaders for the Church and society.

He commended the university for producing distinguished alumni, some of whom are currently serving in government and in religious spaces.

Nestled in the leafy suburb of Lang’ata on Bogani East Road in Nairobi, CUEA stands today as a beacon of faith-based higher education across Eastern Africa.

Founded in 1984 as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA) under the auspices of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA), the institution received its civil charter on November 3, 1992, officially becoming CUEA.

From humble beginnings focused on theological studies, the university has blossomed into a full-fledged institution offering a comprehensive range of academic programmes, including certificate, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees.

CUEA’s strong Catholic identity and regional heritage were cemented early on: CHIEA was formally opened by Pope John Paul II in August 1985. The granting of the charter in 1992 marked its emergence as a private university committed to excellence.

CUEA’s entire operation is driven by a set of foundational core values: Witness of Life, Prayer, Truthfulness, Honesty, Excellence, Commitment, and Competence.

These values directly shape the university’s mission: to provide holistic, ethical, and scientific research, quality teaching, and community service.

The ultimate goal is to form authentic leaders capable of contributing to sustainable development in line with God’s plan.

In recognition of the evolving demands of modern life, CUEA offers a wide and flexible array of programmes spanning five faculties, two schools, two institutes, and a center.

The academic portfolio is broad, ranging from theology, arts, and law through science, education, and commerce to professional certifications and doctoral studies.

Importantly, the university has embraced flexibility through blended, weekend, evening, and Open-Distance e-Learning (ODEL) modes.

This ensures that busy professionals and learners across different geographies can access quality education, making CUEA an inviting environment for academic life right in the heart of Nairobi. Students consistently praise the flexibility, accessibility, and robust ICT integration of CUEA’s e-learning environment.
