Fenwick Malobah, a Mathematics and Physics teacher at Menengai High School in Nakuru County, has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous mathematics lesson after surpassing the previous record of 31 hours, 42 minutes and 54 seconds set by Nigerian educator Sanusi Kazeem in April 2025. Rather than ending the attempt immediately after eclipsing the record, Malobah pressed on to complete a remarkable 45-hour teaching marathon, setting a new benchmark that now awaits official ratification by Guinness World Records.
The record attempt, which began on Friday, June 26, at Menengai High School, drew students, teachers, education stakeholders and members of the public who turned up to witness the historic feat. The marathon was conducted under the theme, "Maths is not a monster; it's a marathon," reflecting Malobah's mission to change negative attitudes towards mathematics and encourage learners to embrace the subject.
Malobah's challenge came after months of preparation and planning. The attempt had initially been scheduled for January 2026 but was postponed after the required approvals and documentation had not been completed. Following clearance from Guinness World Records and other relevant authorities, the marathon was rescheduled for June.
Throughout the challenge, Malobah delivered uninterrupted mathematics lessons drawn from Kenya's secondary school curriculum, covering topics including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, probability and statistics. Students participated in shifts to ensure continuous engagement, a key requirement under Guinness World Records guidelines.
The rules governing the record required Malobah to teach continuously while maintaining active interaction with students. He was only permitted short rest breaks, which were accumulated and taken after several hours of teaching. Independent witnesses, official timekeepers and videographers monitored the entire attempt to ensure full compliance with Guinness World Records regulations.
After crossing the previous world record mark of 31 hours, 42 minutes and 54 seconds, celebrations erupted at the venue as supporters acknowledged the milestone. However, Malobah chose to continue teaching, determined to establish a more formidable record by reaching the 45-hour target.
Speaking during the marathon, Malobah said his primary objective was not merely to set a world record but to inspire learners who consider mathematics a difficult subject. He noted that many students can excel in the discipline if they develop confidence, receive proper guidance and dedicate time to consistent practice.
The teacher also shared his personal journey, revealing that he once struggled in mathematics before improving significantly through determination and hard work. He said that experience motivated him to pursue a career in teaching and to help students overcome fear of the subject.
The event attracted widespread support from the school community, education officials and residents, who described the achievement as a proud moment for Menengai High School, Nakuru County and Kenya. Many hailed the marathon as a demonstration of dedication to education and academic excellence.
Although Malobah has successfully surpassed the previous record and completed the planned 45-hour mathematics lesson, the achievement will only become official after Guinness World Records reviews the submitted evidence. The verification process includes examining video recordings, witness statements, timekeeping logs and other documentation collected throughout the attempt.
If the record is ratified, Malobah will officially become the new Guinness World Record holder for the longest continuous mathematics lesson, replacing Sanusi Kazeem's 31-hour, 42-minute and 54-second mark with a new record of 45 hours.
The accomplishment is expected to inspire educators and learners across Kenya and beyond, highlighting the role of innovation, perseverance and passion in promoting education while placing Kenya on the global stage through an extraordinary academic achievement.
