Lawyers led by Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Charles Kanjama have taken part in the Purple Ribbon Walk to protest the deaths of advocates Edward Muthee Kariuki and Esther Wairimu Keige, while demanding urgent action from security agencies.
The advocates marched in Nairobi as they called for thorough investigations into the deaths of their colleagues and stronger measures to protect lawyers carrying out their professional duties. The walk was organised by LSK as part of efforts to push for accountability and justice.
The legal fraternity said the deaths of Muthee and Wairimu had raised concerns over the safety of advocates and the ability of lawyers to work without fear. LSK maintained that attacks against members of the profession threaten the administration of justice and the rule of law.
Edward Muthee Kariuki was found dead in Athi River, Machakos County, on July 5, 2026. Police launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death as colleagues called for answers.
Esther Wairimu Keige, who served as the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) Legal Services Manager, was also found dead after being reported missing. Her death prompted calls from LSK for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
During the Purple Ribbon Walk, advocates presented their concerns over the deaths and urged the National Police Service and investigative agencies to expedite investigations and bring any suspects to justice.
LSK called for a multi-agency approach in handling the cases, saying the investigations should be transparent, independent and thorough. The society also demanded improved security arrangements for lawyers handling sensitive legal matters.
The lawyers further raised concerns about the risks faced by advocates working on complex cases involving public institutions, land disputes and other contentious issues.
The Purple Ribbon Walk brought together members of the legal profession who used the event to honour the deceased advocates and call for reforms aimed at safeguarding lawyers.
The LSK said it would continue pushing for accountability and monitoring the investigations until the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Edward Muthee Kariuki and Esther Wairimu Keige are fully established.
