Families Displaced As Massive Fire Ravages Kibra Homes

A devastating fire swept through the Kichinjio area of Kibra Sub County, Nairobi, leaving over 200 families without shelter.
The flames tore through rows of tightly packed homes and small businesses, reducing them to ashes in a matter of hours. Residents say the fire spread rapidly, and efforts to contain it were hindered by the narrow, congested roads that made it difficult for fire engines to access the area.
“We tried to fight the fire using buckets and sand, but it was too strong,” said one resident.
Although no injuries were reported, hundreds were forced to spend the night in the open, with most of their belongings lost to the blaze.
This incident follows another deadly fire in the same area just weeks ago, which claimed eight lives, raising alarm over the safety of informal settlements.
The affected families are now appealing to the Nairobi County Government and the Kenya Red Cross for urgent assistance, including food, clothing, and temporary shelter.
Community members are also calling for better road infrastructure and stronger fire response measures to help prevent such tragedies in the future. Relevant Authorities have launched investigations to determine the cause of the fire.
