Hanington Were Killed In Night Attack By Motorcycle-Riding Assailants In Kisumu

Hannington Were, 39, the son of former Matungu MP David Were, was killed in a suspected robbery attack in Kisumu during the early hours of Sunday morning. The incident occurred along Nyerere Road near the Obunga area when unknown assailants riding on a motorcycle attacked him and his friend as they headed to buy food.
According to reports, Hannington had left his residence shortly after midnight accompanied by a friend identified as Peter Mutua. The two were reportedly walking towards Mamba Hotel when they were confronted by the attackers near Makini School. Witnesses said the suspects suddenly turned violent, stabbing Hannington twice in the back and hitting him on the head with a metallic object before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.
Residents and boda boda riders who responded to distress calls rushed the victims to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where Hannington was pronounced dead on arrival. His friend survived the attack and later told investigators that the assailants initially appeared to be ordinary boda boda operators before launching the assault.
Former Matungu MP David Were confirmed the death of his son, describing the incident as painful and shocking to the family. He said doctors informed them that Hannington succumbed to severe stab wounds sustained during the attack. The former legislator noted that his son worked as a compliance officer at the National Social Security Fund and had no known disputes or conflicts.
Police in Kisumu have launched investigations into the killing and are pursuing leads to identify and arrest the attackers. The incident has sparked renewed concern among residents over rising insecurity and violent night attacks in parts of Kisumu County, with locals calling for intensified security patrols and action against criminal gangs operating using motorcycles.
