Beatrice Wangari, the woman at the centre of investigations into the death of Nairobi gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka, has moved to court seeking to set aside a 10-day detention order granted to police as detectives continue probing the circumstances of his sudden death.

Wangari, who was reportedly the last person seen with Dr Obwaka, argues through her legal team that her continued detention is unnecessary, insisting that preliminary findings point to natural causes of death rather than foul play.

The case stems from the sudden death of Dr Obwaka on May 1, 2026, after he visited Wangari’s residence in Kitengela, Nairobi County, where he allegedly spent time before collapsing shortly afterwards.

Police say the doctor had shown signs of distress after leaving the residence and was rushed to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, prompting immediate investigations.

A Kibera court had earlier granted investigators a 10-day detention order to allow completion of forensic examinations, reducing an initial request by the prosecution for a 14-day custodial period.

The court ruled that the extended detention was necessary to allow detectives to conclude key aspects of the investigation, including toxicology analysis and witness statements.

Wangari is currently being held at Kilimani Police Station as investigators examine whether there was any external influence contributing to the doctor’s sudden death.

Her lawyers have strongly opposed the detention, arguing that she has fully cooperated with investigators and voluntarily recorded statements regarding the events leading up to the incident.

They further contend that the available medical findings, including a postmortem report indicating cardiac arrest, support the position that Dr Obwaka died of natural causes.

However, investigators have maintained that the cause of death is not fully conclusive, noting that toxicology tests and forensic analysis of items recovered from the scene are still pending.

Police have collected various exhibits from Wangari’s residence, including food remnants, utensils, and personal items believed to have been in use on the night of the incident.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has indicated that these samples will be subjected to laboratory testing to rule out poisoning or any other external contributing factors.

Meanwhile, family members of the deceased have called for a thorough and transparent investigation, urging authorities to establish the exact circumstances under which Dr Obwaka died.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to the doctor’s prominence in Nairobi’s medical circles and the uncertainty surrounding the final moments of his life.

The court is expected to review Wangari’s application in the coming days, as detectives continue to await forensic results that could determine whether the case remains classified as a natural death or escalates into a criminal investigation.
