The conclusion of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations for 2025 marks the beginning of the crucial transition process for the inaugural cohort of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) system.

This involves the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) placement process, which will determine the admission of students into Senior School (Grade 10).

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, speaking while issuing a brief on the progress, affirmed that the placements will demonstrate a strict commitment to a fair and merit-based selection process, guided transparently by performance and student choice.

The CS clarified that the final placement score for each student is a composite score drawn from various assessments throughout their Junior School years.

The student's merit for Senior School admission is calculated, with 40 percent derived from previous School-Based Assessments (SBAs) conducted in Grades 7 and 8, and the remaining 60 percent from the final national KJSEA examination.

This multi-score approach, combined with the school choices already made by the students, is designed to ensure a holistic and transparent transition into the next education level.

However, the Education Cabinet Secretary acknowledged that, being the first transition of this kind, certain "teething problems" might inevitably be experienced during the massive placement exercise.

He reassured parents and stakeholders that the Ministry of Education is committed to solving any issues encountered quickly and decisively, ensuring that the process ultimately benefits and provides the best possible advantage to all students, making this historic move to Senior School.
