The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has released Sh1.5 billion to pay teachers who participated in the marking of the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) examinations.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the funds will be used to clear outstanding marking allowances owed to examiners who took part in the national assessment exercise.

The payment follows concerns from teachers over delays in receiving their allowances after completing the marking process. The government said the delay was caused by challenges in accessing funds required to facilitate examination activities.

Thousands of teachers were involved in marking the KCSE and KJSEA examinations, which are key components of Kenya’s education system under the Competency-Based Education framework and secondary school assessment.

Ogamba acknowledged the contribution of examiners in ensuring the credibility and integrity of national examinations, saying their work remains essential in determining learners’ academic progression.

The release of the funds is expected to provide relief to teachers who had been waiting for payment after completing their assignments.

Education stakeholders have previously called for adequate financing of KNEC operations to avoid delays in examination-related payments and ensure smooth administration of national assessments.

The Ministry of Education said it will continue working with relevant agencies to improve the management of examinations and enhance efficiency in the education sector.
