Orphanages, A Last Resort For Children With Disabilities
BY FAITH MASIGA
Imagine growing up in a world where you are different. Where you are shunned and discriminated against simply because you have a disability. This is the reality for many children with disabilities in Kenya.
Due to societal stigma and inadequate support systems, children with disabilities are increasingly being placed in dangerous orphanages.
These orphanages often lack the proper resources and staff to provide adequate care, exposing the children to neglect, abuse, and inadequate medical care.
This cycle of stigma and neglect is perpetuated by a lack of understanding and misconceptions surrounding disabilities. Many people believe that these children are a burden or a punishment from God. This leads to discrimination and isolation, which can make it difficult for families to cope with the challenges of raising a child with a disability.
Organizations and advocates are calling for urgent action to address this crisis. They emphasize the need for a comprehensive approach that includes community education, healthcare access, and a robust support system for families with children with disabilities.
Sensitization programs aimed at dispelling myths and misconceptions surrounding disabilities are crucial to combating stigma at its roots.
Furthermore, it is imperative for the government and non-governmental organizations to collaborate to improve the welfare of these children and their families. This could involve developing inclusive policies, enhancing healthcare services, and providing financial assistance to help families care for their disabled children within a supportive environment.
Breaking the cycle of stigma and neglect is essential to ensuring the safety, well-being, and future prospects of children with disabilities in Kenya.
Collective efforts are needed to create a society that embraces diversity and provides equal opportunities for all, regardless of abilities.
