CAF Introduces Mobile-Based Live Interpretation to Revolutionize CHAN Press Briefings
In a pioneering leap for African sports media, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled a Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI) system during the CHAN PAMOJA 2024 tournament, which is being held across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
For the first time in CAF’s history—and as one of the earliest adopters among global sports federations—accredited journalists attending CHAN press conferences can now access real-time multilingual translation directly on their mobile devices. This new system does away with cumbersome headsets, replacing them with a streamlined, app-free solution.
Upon arrival at the venue, journalists simply scan a QR code, triggering a browser-based platform that offers multiple audio interpretation channels, each managed by a professional interpreter. The result: no more missed messages due to language discrepancies and a smoother press conference experience for media from around the world.
The rollout is spearheaded by CAF’s Language Services Unit, under the leadership of Patrice Godonou, who hailed the system as “simple, cost-effective and, above all, accessible,” emphasizing that it empowers attendees to follow and record events using just their phones and earphones.
This enhancement forms part of a broader strategy by CAF’s Communications Division to refine media operations during CHAN 2024. Additional improvements include upgraded Wi-Fi connectivity, expanded digital content distribution, and bolstered match-day operations to better serve more than 800 accredited journalists covering the event.
