Kenya’s hopes of strengthening their push for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a major setback after a 3-1 home defeat to Gambia in a Group F qualifier at the Moi International Sports Centre on Friday evening. The visitors stunned the hosts with three first-half goals that silenced the Nairobi crowd and secured all three points.

The Scorpions got off to a flying start when S. Sinyan opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Newcastle United forward Yankuba Minteh doubled their lead midway through the half. Musa Barrow then compounded Kenya’s misery with a well-taken finish in the 38th minute to give Gambia a commanding 3-0 advantage before the break.

Kenya made changes at the interval in search of a response, but Gambia held firm defensively. The Harambee Stars managed to pull one back through R. Ogam in the 81st minute, raising hopes of a late comeback, but the goal proved to be nothing more than consolation as the visitors comfortably saw out the result.

The defeat leaves Kenya with plenty of work to do in the remaining qualifiers, as they look to recover and reignite their World Cup dream. For Gambia, the impressive victory boosts their standing in Group F and enhances their chances of advancing to the next stage of qualification.
