Azimio-One Kenya Wants Public Participation In IEBC Commissioner's Appointment
Azimio one Kenya's allies now want President Ruto to involve Kenyans in the process of appointing the new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) staff.
Speaking on Sunday, NARC Kenya party leader Martha Karua said the opposition will chase anyone President Ruto will appoint to the commission without public participation.
“I want to send a message to Ruto; we shall not allow you to form a Ruto electoral commission. Even if you try to appoint them, we will kick them out. We will toss it out until Kenyans do what the constitution demands of them,” she said.
This comes amid the ongoing process of recruiting new IEBC Commissioners to take over from former Chairman Wafula Chebukati, commissioners, Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye whose 6-year term of office lapsed, as well as former Vice Chair Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi and Justus Nyang’aya who resigned to avoid facing a tribunal probing which is still ongoing.
Twenty-eight (28) senators against 7 supported the approval of the IEBC (Amendment), after the Senate Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee Chairperson Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei withdrew all proposed amendments.
According to the Bill moved by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho Senator) during the special senate sitting on January 19, the senators supported changes to the composition of the selection panel.
The Bill proposes to have the Parliamentary Service Commission nominate one man and one woman and the Inter-Religious Council two slots.
The Public Service Commission, Political Parties Liaison Committee and the Law Society of Kenya will each nominate one person to the IEBC selection panel which will recruit the new commissioners.
Commissioner Irine Masit is currently on suspension and is facing a tribunal headed by Justice Aggrey Muchelule that is investigating her suitability to continue holding office.
