A Nairobi woman identified as Juliette Awata has sparked widespread discussion online after claiming she was left to settle a KSh 10,000 restaurant bill following a meeting with a man she said she had met through social media. The story quickly attracted public attention and prompted debate about safety and expectations during first-time meetings arranged online.
According to Juliette’s account, communication between the two began through direct messages before the man, identified publicly as Allan Ochieng, proposed meeting in person. She said she reviewed his online presence and agreed to the meeting after concluding that the arrangement appeared genuine.
Juliette stated that the meeting took place at a rooftop restaurant located within Sarit Centre in Nairobi. She said the man had already arrived and had begun ordering before she joined him at the venue.
She alleged that during the meeting, food and drinks continued to be ordered and the interaction appeared normal. Juliette maintained that there were no immediate signs that anything unusual would happen during the evening.
According to her narration, the man later received a phone call and stepped away from the table. She said he returned briefly before leaving again, reportedly to continue handling the call.
Juliette claimed that after the second exit, he failed to return. She said she waited and attempted to contact him but did not receive any response.
She later approached restaurant staff to confirm whether payment had already been made. Juliette alleged she was informed that the bill remained outstanding and had not been settled.
She said the final amount presented was approximately KSh 10,000. Juliette claimed that her personal consumption was only a small portion of the total but she eventually paid the bill after efforts to reach the man were unsuccessful.
Juliette further alleged that she was temporarily prevented from leaving as staff sought clarification on how the outstanding amount would be handled before allowing her to depart.
After the incident, she shared her experience publicly online. Her account spread rapidly across Kenyan social media platforms and generated mixed reactions from users discussing dating conduct and personal responsibility.
Some online posts later claimed that the man’s social media profile became inaccessible after the allegations circulated. However, those claims have not been independently verified.
As public interest grew, discussions expanded beyond the incident itself to broader concerns about meeting strangers through digital platforms and managing expectations around expenses during first meetings.
As of Monday, June 8, 2026, no official police statement, legal complaint, or independent public confirmation had been issued regarding the incident. The details currently available remain based largely on Juliette’s public account and online reports.
