CS Education Julius Ogamba says two teachers confirmed dead and 26 others injured in an accident at the City Primary School in the Ngara Area.
At least two teachers were killed and 26 others injured on Saturday after a matatu veered off the road and ploughed into educators gathered outside Nairobi City Primary School in Ngara, where KUPPET Nairobi branch elections were taking place, officials confirmed.
The victims were leaving the polling venue after casting their ballots when the public service vehicle lost control near the school gate and rammed into the crowd. One teacher died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries later in hospital, according to union officials.
Eyewitnesses said the impact caused panic and confusion as injured teachers lay scattered along the roadside, with bystanders rushing to offer help before emergency services arrived. Some of the victims sustained serious injuries, including fractures and head trauma.
Ambulances ferried the injured to several hospitals across the capital, among them Kenyatta National Hospital, Aga Khan Hospital, and Nairobi West Hospital, where doctors worked through the evening to stabilize those in critical condition.
Police cordoned off the scene as rescue operations continued, temporarily diverting traffic along Murang’a Road. Officers later towed away the matatu as investigators began reconstructing the circumstances leading to the crash.
Preliminary investigations are focusing on whether speeding, mechanical failure, or loss of control caused the accident. Authorities said the driver was arrested to assist with investigations, though no formal charges had been announced by the end of the day.
The tragedy cast a dark cloud over the union elections, with KUPPET officials suspending activities at the venue and expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life. The union said it would support the affected families and injured teachers.
The incident has renewed calls for stricter road safety enforcement in Nairobi, particularly around schools and public gathering points, as condolences continued to pour in from educators, leaders, and the public nationwide.
