In a significant stride toward comprehensive inclusion in higher learning, Cooperative University of Kenya, is spearheading efforts to ensure tertiary education is accessible to all including Persons With Disabilities.
The University’s Registrar for Academics, Cooperative Development, Research, and Innovation, Zachary Njeru, while appearing for an interview on Signs TV Breakfast Show said, his mandate involves overseeing academic programs across all levels, ensuring that even the lowest educational tiers are not secluded but are integrated into a holistic learning environment.
"We are open to any person that comes to the campus, we have two sets of students, government sponsored and self sponsored who are all Kenyans and have a right to education, hence it is our responsibility as an insitution of tertiary level of education to have the right facilities to train them because we cannot reject them," Mr Njeru stated.
Mr. Njeru revealed the extensive measures the Cooperative University has taken to foster an inclusive campus, a blueprint for how institutions should proactively serve every prospective student.
He stated that in terms of accessibility, the university has redesigned their infrastructure, ensuring that all crucial places on campus are easily reachable for every person with a disability (PWD). The strategic placement of ramps and other essential features, he says, eliminates physical barriers and secures equal access across the entire institution.
For those with visual disabilities, Mr. Njeru said the commitment is equally profound, as they acquired specialized Braille machines, enabling students to engage with their curriculum and, crucially, to sit for examinations on equal footing with their peers. This is supplemented by the use of big prints, ensuring materials are adaptable to various needs.
Mr. Njeru affirms that the university is prepared to welcome any person with a disability. Their inclusive approach means that they allow students to come with their guides, ensuring a supportive environment for navigation and study.
The institution's goal is to train all students in an all-inclusive way, guaranteeing that disability is not a barrier to accessing quality higher education.
