Kenyan lawyer and former Justice Minister Martha Karua was denied entry into Uganda on Monday after travelling to Kampala to participate in legal proceedings connected to opposition politician Kizza Besigye and co-accused Obeid Lutale. The incident reportedly occurred at Entebbe International Airport shortly after her arrival.
According to legal representatives, Karua had travelled as part of a defence team involved in proceedings before Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court. She was initially processed by immigration authorities before being informed that she would not be allowed entry and was directed to return to Kenya.
The Uganda Law Society confirmed the incident and expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the decision. The body called for clarification from authorities regarding the denial of entry to a lawyer scheduled to participate in ongoing court proceedings.
Karua has been part of the legal team representing Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale in Uganda’s ongoing treason-related case. The proceedings have drawn regional attention due to their political sensitivity and questions surrounding access to legal representation.
Her involvement in the case has previously attracted scrutiny, particularly over requirements for foreign lawyers to obtain temporary practising authorization before appearing in Ugandan courts.
The latest development comes amid heightened legal and political tension surrounding Besigye’s prosecution, with defence teams raising concerns over restrictions affecting trial preparation and client access.
Reports indicate that Karua’s visit was also linked to related court matters involving members of the broader defence team, who have been engaged in ongoing hearings in Kampala.
Ugandan authorities have not issued a detailed public explanation for the decision to deny her entry, leaving legal groups and observers awaiting clarification.
The incident has added to ongoing debate within legal circles over cross-border legal representation and access to counsel in politically sensitive cases in Uganda.
