Taita Taveta, WWF Unlock Jobs For Pwds In Plastic Deal

BY BARAKA SIMBA
A new partnership between the County Government of Taita Taveta and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is opening doors for persons with disabilities (PWDs) to access dignified employment through the green economy.
The initiative, rolled out under the Danida Green Business Partnership (DGIP), aims to formalize plastic waste collection while creating structured, income-generating opportunities in the circular economy. For many PWDs, often excluded from mainstream economic activity, this marks a major step toward inclusive development.
Plastic waste, a major environmental threat, is now being reimagined as a tool for empowerment. Through the initiative, PWDs, alongside women, youth, and men, are set to benefit from decent green jobs that not only generate income but also protect the environment.
Speaking at his office, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water, Sanitation, Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources, Mwandawiro S. Grantone, said the program will tackle both unemployment and climate challenges.
“The project will contribute to environmental protection and avoid greenhouse emissions, while promoting innovation and accountability,” he stated.
Partners in the project include WWF Verdensnaturfonden, Mr. Green Africa, Empowering.eco, and the Kenya Association of Manufacturers. Together with the Taita Taveta county government, the collaboration will offer skills development, resource mobilization, and strategic support.
For PWDs in Taita Taveta, this initiative offers more than just jobs—it promises dignity, inclusion, and recognition as key contributors to a sustainable economy.
