Southampton stun City to reach League Cup semis, Henderson denies Wolves
Premier League bottom side Southampton handed Manchester City a shocking exit in the League Cup Quarter Finals, after a well-deserved 2-0 win on Wednesday, at the St. Marys Stadium.
Stunning first half goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo were enough to set the Saints rolling onto the semis, after a dismal performance from Pep Guardiola’s team in both halves.
According to City boss Guardiola, they did not play well and the better team won. He attributed this to inadequate preparation.
“When you are not prepared to play this game you arrive one inch late and don’t score a goal. When you are prepared you score the goal.’’
“Today was a bad night, the opponent was better so we have to congratulate them. We didn’t deserve to win.”
Pep will demand an immediate response in Saturday’s crucial Premier League derby against Manchester United, as they are trailing five points behind league leaders Arsenal.
The Victory for Southampton sets up a clash Newcastle in a two-legged semi-final later in January.
-Nottingham Forest set up United Clash-
Nottingham Forest earned a last four tie against Manchester United after beating Wolves 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the City Ground.
Forest scored an early opener in the first half courtesy of Willy Boly before Raul Jimenez levelled the score line for Wolves.
Dean Henderson was the hero for Forest after keeping out Ruben Neves’ penalty and saving Joe Hodge’s spot kick in the 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Wolves.
